Several years ago, I found myself numb. I’d left a job I loved and lost my mother to cancer. I felt bleak and unmoored, rattling around in the world without the routine and responsibilities which had always been an anchor. The blessing of that time was that there was an abundance of love and support from my husband, my kids, our friends and extended family. As the immediate searing pain of grief began to heal into the scar I’ll always carry, it became time to choose a path forward.

Throughout life we all experience those moments. One day we look up and find ourselves standing in the woods, staring down two divergent paths. It’s time to make a choice, take action, have faith.

In that particular moment, for me, I pulled up my phone and applied for a small business license, officially founding Kairos Project Management LLC. If the path I was once on is no longer available, I thought to myself, then I will forge my own way. That decision led to more opportunity, friendship and growth that I ever could have anticipated.

Today, I’m a wife, a mother, a sister. I’m a friend, a colleague, a boss, a volunteer, a neighbor. I’m also a bibliophile, an endurance runner, an amateur foodie, a failed gardener. Professionally, I’m a project manager, a tactical and strategic planner, a passionate believer in the power of process thinking and data visualization through simple, intuitive models.

I’m also an aspiring author, which brings us full circle back to today. As the new year unfurls ahead of us, I find myself again at a crossroads. What do I want to invest in this dream? The best way to develop a skill is by doing. You don’t run a marathon by sitting on the sidelines. I won’t become a writer unless I pick up the pen and write.

I hope you enjoy the results.
